Local accolades have been accorded to the new Vitara, with the NZ4WD magazine naming the model as the Compact 4WD SUV of the Year, while New Zealand Autocar magazine praised the Vitara for “its outstanding value for money”.
In announcing the New Zealand award, NZ4WD said, “Suzuki took a broad approach when planning new Vitara. It is an involving drive which delights with an eager, never-say-die engine and a chassis and drive train fine-tuned for their active driver.”
Reviewing the Vitara in the publication, journalist Ross McKay wrote: “There’s a spring in the step of the eager, free-spinning engine, a snap in the way the new 6-speed automatic picks ups and drop gears and a familiar, compliant and grippy edge to the way the chassis go about its business.”
Fighting off tough competition from four other motor vehicle brands, the new Suzuki Vitara has also scooped a British award and emerged tops in its class.
In the annual survey of the top 100 new cars of 2016 conducted by The Sunday Times in the UK, the Vitara was declared winner of the Compact Crossover category.
Launched recently on the New Zealand market, the latest generation Vitara was applauded by judges for its value for money and high specification as standard.
“Squint - hard - and you might mistake the new Vitara for a Range Rover Evoque,” said the newspaper. “That’s because Suzuki’s crossover has morphed from a cheap and cheerful off-roader into a primped, well-equipped vehicle that’s top of its class. This has a lot to do with the low starting price.”
Strong international demand and market acceptance of this exciting new model means Suzuki New Zealand Ltd is anticipating a volume in excess of 1,500 unit sales this year.
The fuel efficient 1.6 litre Vitara is additional to the Suzuki passenger car range which also includes the smaller four wheel drive Jimmy and larger Grand Vitara models.
Five versions of Vitara are available locally, with the choice of two and four wheel drive (Allgrip), and priced from a highly competitive $27,990 plus on road costs.
The original Vitara in 1988 was regarded the first “serious” compact four wheel drive for use both on and off road, and the new model retains the pioneering spirit of the original while raising both refinement and equipment criteria.
